Learning To Fish

"Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime." - Unknown
Growing up in a very poor household, this quote means more to me than most could understand. My mother did the best she could to keep a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and food in our bellies. To her shelter came first, then food, but at times the shelter fund dipped into the food fund and there just wasn't enough to go around.
It was the early 1980's and my mother did what anyone in that terrible position would do, she went to the government for help. They put us on food stamps. Back then, food stamps were horrible to take to a grocery store and use. They came in books of $5, $10, $20s and you had to tear each one out and hand them to the clerk. You didn't get to hide behind the quick swipe of a card as you do now a days. Going to the grocery store was like the walk of shame, nothing felt good about it. Don't get me wrong, we were thrilled to have food in our refrigerator but nothing felt quite "right" about the way in which we acquired our food.
